Innovative OLED tail lights as standard
The innovative OLED tail lights are a new feature of the S-Class Coupé and Cabriolet. With this technology (organic light emitting diode), wafer-thin layers of organic materials are printed on a glass plate and made to illuminate. The total of 66 ultra-flat OLEDs act like floating elements inside the tail light; in addition, they emit a highly homogeneous pattern and form a unique day and night design. Locking and unlocking the vehicle is additionally emphasised by an animated dynamic light sequence with subsequent dimming-up of the tail lights. Naturally the OLED tail lights also employ the usual Mercedes-Benz multi-level technology with different levels of intensity for brake lamps and direction indicators, depending on the driving conditions and ambient brightness (day/night).
Two new wheels allow further individualisation of the vehicle in conjunction with the AMG Line. These are 50.8 cm (20-inch) AMG 10-spoke wheels painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish (optional for AMG Line, including AMG flared wheel arches) or painted in high-gloss black with a high-sheen finish (optional for AMG Line Plus ).

Luxury lounge with Widescreen Cockpit and new generation of steering wheels
A fresh interior look is guaranteed by three new trim lines (high-gloss brown burr walnut wood, satin-finish grey ash wood and designo flowing lines magnolia wood) as well as three new upholstery lines (designo Exclusive nappa leather AMG Line Plus porcelain/tizian red, designo Exclusive nappa leather porcelain/tizian red and designo Exclusive nappa leather AMG Line Plus Bengal red/black).
The interior of the new S-Class models is characterised by the two new high-resolution and brilliant displays, each with a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches. Visually, the two displays under one shared glass cover blend into a Widescreen Cockpit and as a central element consequently emphasise the horizontal orientation of the interior design.
Like the instrument cluster, this Widescreen Cockpit contains a large display with virtual instruments in the direct field of vision of the driver, as well as a central display above the centre console. The fully digital cockpit offers the three visually very different styles "Classic", "Sport" and "Progressive". Depending on personal preference or matching the selected interior, the styles can be quickly changed from the instrument cluster and the central display. Alongside certain menu contents such as trip data or consumption figures, the driver can now additionally view the navigation display data or the ECO display in the instrument cluster. This helps the driver to make the driving style more efficient.
Both models have touch control buttons on the steering wheel. They respond to swiping motions like the screen of a smartphone. They enable the driver to control the functions of the instrument cluster and of the entire infotainment system without having to take their hands off the steering wheel. The operation of DISTRONIC and cruise control with controls directly on the steering wheel is another new feature. The infotainment system can also be operated via the touchpad with controller in the centre console.
Beyond the existing operation of the infotainment system, LINGUATRONIC voice control has been extended to include vehicle functions. Voice commands can now also be used to control the air conditioning and seat heating/ventilation, interior lighting (ambient lighting, reading lights, lighting in the rear), fragrancing/ionisation, seat massage function and Head-up Display. Depending on language version and vehicle equipment, up to 450 individual voice commands are now possible.

ENERGIZING comfort control for greater well-being and alertness
ENERGIZING comfort control (optional) links various comfort systems in the vehicle. It systematically uses the functions of the climate control system (including fragrancing) and the seats (heater, ventilation, massage), the wall heating as well as lighting and musical atmospheres, and enables a specific wellness set-up tailored to the mood and need of the customer. This enhances well-being and performance when driving.
Depending on the equipment level, up to six programs are available:
·Freshness
·Warmth
·Vitality
·Joy
·Comfort
·Training (three training modes – muscle relaxation, muscle activation and balance - each with several exercises)
The programmes all run for ten minutes. They are visualised in the media display with colour graphics, and backed by suitable music. Five songs are already stored in the programme. The key function in the "Vitality" program, for example, is fast music with many beats per minute. The S-Class repertoire therefore features "Feelin' Good" by Leon Riskin, for instance. If personal music selections are available, e.g. via the Media Interface, the system analyses them in the background and assigns them to a programme based on the beats per minute (bpm). Individual functions of the programmes can be deactivated.
ENERGIZING comfort control also incorporates ambience lighting, which is harmoniously tailored to each of the individual screen designs. With 64 colours, the optional extended ambience lighting offers a wealth of individual settings. The light stages the interior like a work of art by composing colour worlds from different colours.

New infotainment systems and wireless charging of smartphones
All S-Class models feature the latest-generation COMAND Online infotainment system as standard. COMAND Online offers fast 3D hard-drive navigation with topographical map display, photo-realistic 3D buildings and 3D map rotations. Comprehensive information is displayed on the navigation map: in addition to real-time traffic density information it can e.g. include Car-to-X warning messages, the weather, filling stations including current fuel prices and free parking spaces.
Near Field Communication transforms the smartphone into a digital vehicle key.
With the Smartphone Integration package, Apple's smartphone-based infotainment system CarPlay and Google's Android Auto can be used. If a corresponding smartphone is connected by USB, the customer can, if desired, switch to the CarPlay or Android Auto interface.
Mobile phones can be charged as standard, wirelessly and without a telephone holder. Wireless charging works with all mobile devices (up to a screen diagonal of 15.2 cm) that support or can be retrofitted to support the Qi standard. The charging pad is integrated into the stowage compartment at the front of the centre console. In addition, Multifunction Telephony (optional feature) allows suitably designed mobile phones to be connected with the vehicle's exterior aerial.
With the  new Concierge service, Mercedes me connect customers have a host of individual services at their disposal: from making restaurant reservations and obtaining tips about tourist routes, to gathering information on cultural or sporting events and sending navigation destinations directly to the vehicle.

New driving assistance systems with extended functions
The S-Class Coupé and Cabriolet are taking a further step towards autonomous driving with new or functionally considerably extended driving assistance systems. Active Distance Control DISTRONIC and Active Steering Assist now provide even more comfortable support for the driver to keep a safe distance and steer. The speed is now adjusted automatically ahead of bends, junctions or roundabouts, for example (country-specific variations may occur in terms of the individual functions). For this purpose, for example, Active Distance Control DISTRONIC makes considerably greater use of map and navigation data than hitherto.

Suspension with eyes now sees even better
In 2014 in the S-Class Coupé, the optional MAGIC BODY CONTROL suspension with curve tilting function was a world first in a standard-production car. The body tilts to the inside of the turn by up to 2.65 degrees and thereby reduces the transverse forces perceived by the passengers. This innovative suspension system recognises the course of the road using a stereo camera behind the windscreen. In the new S-Class Coupé, this suspension control is further improved: the system's new stereo camera has a much better performance and works at speeds up to 180 km/h.
The S-Class Cabriolet is fitted as standard with the full-support AIRMATIC semi-active air suspension featuring infinitely variable damping control.

New V8 biturbo with cylinder shutoff, V6 with gliding function
The new V8 biturbo in the S 560 Coupé and S 560 Cabriolet consumes up to eight percent less fuel than its predecessor. To lower the fuel consumption, four cylinders of the new V8 are deactivated simultaneously under partial load with the help of the CAMTRONIC valve-lift adjustment system (Coupé only). This reduces the pumping loss while improving the overall efficiency of the remaining four cylinders by shifting the operating point towards higher loads. The turbochargers positioned in the V of the cylinder banks represent another special feature. The new V8 has an output of 345 kW (469 hp) with a peak torque of 700 Nm.
The Coupé with V6 petrol engine and a rated output of 270 kW (367 hp) is now called the S 450 (fuel consumption combined: 8.9 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 204 g/km). A new gliding function contributes to efficiency under real driving conditions. When the driving situation and charge level of the battery allow, the combustion engine is decoupled from the powertrain and runs at idle, so that the vehicle can coast freely. The 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission is another new feature of the S 450. The broad ratio spread of gears one to nine allows a clearly perceptible reduction in engine speed and is a decisive factor behind the high level of energy efficiency and ride comfort. The S 450 is equipped with a petrol particulate filter.

Interesting facts about the two-door S-Class
Did you know that...
… in the interior, the S-Class Coupé is one of the quietest series production cars of all? This is confirmed by wind tunnel measurements in which the driver's ear is simulated by an artificial head, as well as by test drives with trained test subjects. The aeroacoustics experts optimised the exterior form of the Coupé in key areas as early as the design phase. The bodyshell and the door sealing concept, to name but two examples, were configured to further reduce wind noise. The open-top sister model likewise has a high level of acoustic comfort: a three-layer acoustic soft top comes as standard.
the S-Class Cabriolet has exceptional torsional stiffness? Innovative solutions such as the luggage compartment bulkhead made of aluminium and magnesium as well as the aluminium rear floor also lower the bodyshell weight to the level of the S-Class Coupé. The standard-fit roll-over protection system behind the rear head restraints not only features pyrotechnic initiation of the actuators for the first time, but in addition the roll bars themselves are moved into position by a gas generator.
…the adaptive windscreen wiper system MAGIC VISION CONTROL (standard equipment) automatically adapts the washer fluid volume to the ambient conditions or level of soiling? If the soft top of the Cabriolet is open, the volume of washer fluid is also reduced to prevent any spraying into the interior. In every respect MAGIC VISION CONTROL offers the driver the best possible visibility even during wiper movement. The washer fluid is sprayed directly ahead of the wiper blades, and wiped away with no delay. This is done by small nozzles in a distribution rail above the wiper blade. Thanks to targeted distribution, the consumption of washer fluid is reduced by up to 50 percent.
…the six high-quality fragrances of the AIR-BALANCE package were specially created by a perfumier? The fragrancing can be switched on and off manually, and the intensity can be adjusted. The interior smell of the S-Class is individualised by the fragrancing system. The smell of the interior is not permanently changed as a result of fragrancing, nor are the fragrance molecules deposited on the vehicle's fabric surfaces or on clothing. The fragrance is discreet and mild, and dissipates rapidly.
...the switch in the centre console can be used to open and close the soft top of the Cabriolet within around 20 seconds while on the move, up to a speed of 50 km/h? With the electronic key, the soft top can also be opened and closed from outside the vehicle.
…the S-Class Cabriolet has an intelligently conceived, automatic boot separator? In the boot the soft top is separated from the remaining boot capacity by means of an electrically operated retractable cover which encloses the soft top. This boot separator extends automatically when opening the soft top. This means that the driver does not need to stop in order to operate the boot separator manually, providing for added convenience. The soft top remains closed if the luggage compartment has been so loaded in such a way that there are objects in the area of the boot separator. When the soft top is closed, the boot separator can be retracted by pressing a button in the inner panelling of the boot lid, so as to increase the available luggage space.
…MAGIC SKY CONTROL (optional equipment) makes it possible to switch the panoramic glass roof of the Coupé to light or dark at the touch of a button? When light, the roof is almost completely transparent and allows an open-air experience, even in the coldest weather. When dark, light transmission, i.e. the proportion of outside light that is allowed through into the interior, falls to less than 1 percent and thus reduces heating-up of the vehicle by up to 10 °C. In addition, it is possible to shade the interior completely by means of a roller blind.
...the trim elements are commissioned individually for each vehicle, based on the colour and grain, and are therefore unique? The trim with Flowing Lines (optional equipment) is produced by a combination of precision machining and traditional craftsmanship. As part of this, the substrate beneath the fine wood veneer of the three-dimensional trim element is exposed in a special process using a fine milling cutter (with a diameter of 0.8 mm). The individually milled lines follow the shape of the trim, thus reinforcing the three-dimensional effect.
…the two Burmester® sound systems (optional equipment) use Frontbass technology? Woofers integrated into the bodyshell ensure highly impressive bass reproduction.
… the S-Class Cabriolet has a so-called storm bar soft top? When closing, the required closing forces are generated by moving the tensioning arms beyond the dead centre position – a process known as 'overcentring'. This avoids the need for any additional closures on the soft top compartment lid, in keeping with the high design quality embodied by the S-Class Cabriolet.
... convertibles are built for use in the summer, but at Mercedes-Benz Cars they still have to absolve stringent winter tests? These include dependable opening and closing of the soft top in temperatures ranging from -20° to +80°C.

Sporty, elegant aura
The front section impressively suggests the dynamism and elegance of these two-door models. The centrepiece is the three-dimensional diamond grille with the Mercedes star and one louvre. On request the LED Intelligent Light System is available with Swarovski crystals. The use of high-quality crystals for the indicators (30 round crystals) and daytime driving lamps (17 irregular crystals) creates an unusual day and night design.
Long bonnet, short overhangs, low greenhouse and high beltlines: the side design of the Coupé and Cabriolet thrills with its dynamic silhouette. The side view is characterised by the dropping line as a hallmark of the brand. It emerges from the front wheel arch and structures the design. The pronounced shoulder above the rear wheel accentuates the athletic character.
In the Cabriolet, the taut, multilayered soft top underscores the vehicle's high class when closed. The soft top is available in black, dark blue, beige and dark red. Under the microscope: OLED tail lamps
Innovative tail lamps as standard
Thanks to sophisticated pressure compensating ventilation when driving in the mountains, as well as other measures, the OLED modules are well protected against moisture.
OLED stands for "organic light emitting diode". In each OLED unit, two electrodes, one of which at least must be transparent, encloses numerous thin layers of organic semiconductor material. The layers are less than one thousandth of a millimetre thick. A low DC voltage of between three and four volts causes the layers to light up. Like conventional LEDs, OLEDs are based on the phenomenon of electro-luminescence. The colour depends on the nature of the molecules in the light source. In contrast to spot light sources such as LEDs, which are semiconductor crystals, OLEDs light up whole areas: their light achieves a whole new order of homogeneity at a high level, and can be variably dimmed. It creates no shadows and needs no reflectors, optical fibres or similar optical components – which makes OLED units both efficient and light. Moreover, they require almost no cooling. This means that the functional elements of an OLED tail light are up to 85 to 90 percent smaller than in traditional tail lights.
Powertrain
Powerful V-engines
The S-Class Coupé and S-Class Cabriolet are powered by a new V8 biturbo engine. As an alternative, a V6 with a gliding function is available for the Coupé. As standard this engine variant is combined with 4MATIC all-wheel drive.
A combination of biturbocharging and direct petrol injection with spray-guided combustion increases the thermodynamic efficiency, thereby reducing the fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. Particularly fast and precise piezo injectors spray the fuel at high pressure into the eight combustion chambers. Multiple injection occurs on-demand, ensuring a homogeneous fuel/air mixture. The delivery of fuel is electronically controlled and fully variable for a fuel pressure between 100 and 200 bar.
Alternative for the Coupé: V6 petrol engine with gliding function

Cylinder shut-off in detail: the new V8 biturbo in the Coupé
The cylinders are turned on and off by the interplay between engine control and actuators on the cylinder head. The switchover to four-cylinder operation is accomplished by eight actuators that act on the axially movable cam parts of the intake and exhaust camshafts via a selector. These cam parts are held on the carrier shaft by gears and are locked in the respective end positions by means of a locking mechanism. The intake and exhaust valves of cylinders 2, 3, 5 and 8 do not open due to the zero-lift cams of the cam parts. At the same time, the fuel supply and ignition are deactivated, so that no unburned mixture is left in the deactivated combustion chamber.

Cylinder shutoff is active in the engine-speed range between 900 and 3250 rpm, provided the driver has selected mode C or E with the DYNAMIC SELECT switch. Cylinder shutoff is inactive in all other transmission modes.
As soon as the driver requests higher engine power via the position of the accelerator or as soon as the engine speed goes above 3250 rpm, cylinders 2, 3, 5 and 8 are reinstated within a matter of milliseconds. The transition between the two operating modes is imperceptible.
The new V8 biturbo employs a centrifugal pendulum to reduce both the fourth-order vibrations in eight-cylinder mode as well as the second-order vibrations in four-cylinder mode.
All Coupé versions are equipped with a petrol particulate filter as standard.
Driving assistance systems
Automated driving functions and exemplary safety
As members of the large and successful S-Class family, the Coupé and Cabriolet benefit from the same extensive innovations that were recently introduced in the Saloon. These include new or functionally considerably extended driving assistance systems. Within the system's limits, Active Distance Control DISTRONIC and Active Steering Assist now support the driver even more conveniently in keeping a safe distance and steering, and the vehicle speed is now also automatically adjusted on bends and at road junctions. Also on board are Active Emergency Stop Assist and a considerably improved Active Lane Changing Assist.
The S-Class Cabriolet and Coupé now keep an even closer eye on the traffic situation: improved camera and radar systems will allow it to see up to 250 m ahead in future. They also make substantially greater use of map and navigation data. This means that DISTRONIC Active Proximity Assist is able to assist the driver in many situations based on the route, and conveniently adjust the vehicle speed.
The driver is also able to see at a glance which assistance functions have been selected, and to which situations the systems are reacting at present. Clearly understood icons – e.g. a steering wheel with hands on both sides – give information both on the screen and in the head-up display.
All functions are now controlled from the steering wheel.
